Rough, Yet Satisfying

28 Aug

School was rough today. It was so long, and I was super exhausted. I don’t think I could have stayed another minute. I was so nauseous, too. And I have a killer headache. But I did correctly diagnose a 4 year old girl (in a clinical vignette) with a purulent bacterial meningitis manifesting in her subarachnoid space with a high concentration of neutrophils (hence the purulence) and with phlebitis due to the meningitis. It was secondary to chronic otitis media. Maybe I can actually do this whole doctor thing! I’m getting pretty good at it 🙂 So that made me excited, because I did get pimped on the question and I got every single thing right! Which is very rare in this class. Gah Pathology!

Celebrate With Me!

17 May

I finished my OS3 Exam 3 parts 2 and 3 today!! All done with in-house exams, woohoo!!! Now I just have a neurobio miniboard next Tuesday and a cumulative miniboard next Friday. One…More…Week…I can do this!

I got my anatomy miniboard score back, and I did really well! I didn’t get the raw score back yet, but I’m getting an 85.75% for it, so I got above the national average 🙂 and it brought my OS2 final grade up to a B, holla!!

Starting Out the New Year with a Booooo! :(

1 Jan

I called the doctor, and he had me go to the ER (super lame), and they admitted me (even more lame!) so now I’ve spent Christmas AND New Year’s Eve/Day in the hospital. I’m hoping to get out soon. I would like to be able to go to school still this semester, and it starts…TOMORROW. I know I won’t make it to class tomorrow, but the notes are all online, so that’s fine, but I really would like to be able stay enrolled this semester. I’m still not really sure what’s wrong, but I got some broad spectrum antibiotic for some unidentified infection I suppose, and steroids to reduce swelling in my brain. My sodium levels also got really low, so I got mannitol, too. Fun stuff! Oh, and of course pain medications for pain. Can’t really go wrong with Dilaudid, so that’s how my holiday went.

I passed my biochem miniboard (that I didn’t really study for, shh), which means that I have officially passed my 1st semester of medical school! I needed that.

In fact, my entire M1 class passed, because we’re that cool.

My Grades for the semester are as follows:

  • Community Health: A
  • Fundamentals of Medicine: A
  • Basic Principles of Human Biology (Code for Biochemistry): B
  • Organ Systems I (The Bulk of Everything We Learned): C

The C in Organ Systems I can be raised to a B if I do well on the Physiology and/or Histology/Cell Biology Miniboards. I had a B in it the whole time, until I kinda failed the last test and got a C on the biochem miniboard. However, under the circumstances, I’m pretty darn proud of that C in OS1, thank you.

BP is OVER!!

And…I got a B! 1st med school class complete…NOT BAD 🙂

Organ Systems 1 time!!!

First Day of Medical School was Today!!!

2 Jul

OMG, such a long day, but it was great! I was exhausted after not sleeping last night and having to wake up to move my car (parking in midtown Atlanta is frustrating to say the least), but it was fantastic!

I got a laptop, portable multiple drive/DVD burner…thing, backpack, pen, flash drive, and external hard drive. I met my classmates, faculty members, and advisors. Tomorrow, I get my big sib. I’m really excited for that!

I was looking over my class schedule, and I feel behind already! lol it’s SOOO intense. I knew what I was getting myself into, though. I foresee a lot of caffeine in my future, that’s all I have to say about that.

I live like 3 miles away from the school, and it took me 30 minutes to get there and an hour to get back! A combination of traffic and being utterly lost. I’m glad I gave myself that extra time, as it seems I may have to do all the time here in Atlanta. No matter, I love it here. I can walk nearly everywhere I need to go from my apartment. Convenient!!

I can’t believe it’s really happening! I’m living my dream!!!
