First Day of School

12 Aug

So my first day back went pretty well. It was just orientation, so nothing difficult. It was SO tiring, though. I could sleep a thousand sleeps right now. Imagine when the lectures actually start…as in tomorrow! I have a fever and a headache, though. We got the lecture packets for the next 2 days for if we wanted to be gunners and pre-read. So…pew pew! I registered again with the office of student disabilities. I got my home health aide back, because I’ll need her in the evenings and on weekends because I’ll be tired and because of chemo and stuff. It’s kinda kicking my butt a little. It’s rougher than I thought it would be. I still haven’t figured out a way to get nutrition either. I got a waiver for my Hep B shot, since I can’t have shots like that right now. I called the company that mails me some of my medications, and apparently, my doctor never sent in one of my scripts yet, so I’ll have to call her tomorrow. It’s storming really hard right now. It stormed hard while we were in class, too, and knocked the power out for a second. I’m a little nervous about this school year. Looking at the packets and the books, it’s going to be really hard. They said so, too. I don’t know if I can really do this or if I was just kidding myself. I mean I know I could if I was healthy, but…I’m not. I’ll try my best, though. I’m in too deep to quit now!

ER Trip

25 Jul

I had to go to the hospital again last night because my heart was beating out of whack and my fever shot back up again. I’m back home and doing okay now. I’m going to spend the day with my brother and with my mom when she gets home.

I Definitely Overdid It

15 Jul

The stomach pain is worse now than before, and my fever got so ridiculously high that I was delirious and needed to go to the hospital, but couldn’t quite call, as I forgot the number for 9-1-1 >_<. I did manage to call someone who called for me. I was seeing things, but I really don’t remember it, and I guess I passed out. I don’t remember getting to the hospital, but I woke up in the hospital covered in ice packs and freezing my little patootie off. Even the saline was cold. I still don’t know what is causing this fever, but it needs to cut it out.

I Left.

12 Jul

Last night I went to the ER because I was in so much pain, I was vomiting blood, and I had a ridiculously high fever of 104. They were able to stop the bleeding, reduce the pain, and bring the fever down to 102, but the wanted to admit me. They put me on broad spectrum antibiotics until they figure out exactly what type of infection we’re dealing with here. But you know what I did? I left. I just…walked out. Enough of this crap. I wanted to go home. My friend, Kristi, is coming to visit me today and I wanted it to be a visit at my apartment, so I left. I’ll just take a bunch of Tylenol and hope my fever goes away, I guess, I mean what can you do? And I went to the pharmacy, I have antibiotics that were prescribed, I’ll take those. I want to be in my own bed, puh-lease! For at least a week, damn! Is that too much to ask? Seriously? It’s my birthday this weekend, can’t it please just be good, please?

I really thought I was a goner last night. I panicked. I get annoyed when people try to sell me on bull. I know miracles happen, I’ve been praying for one. But I also know that God created doctors and scientists who come up with medicines, and He made science, and these people are pretty smart. They may not always be right, but they’re right a lot. I hope for the best, but I also prepare for the worst so as not to be caught off guard. Few people will let me talk about it. They keep telling me I’ll be fine, but you know what? I’m not fine. I have a legitimate fear that I will die from this, and I feel like people are invalidating my feelings. Everyone acts like no that could never happen, not to me. I don’t want to die, but maybe I will, maybe I won’t. Hopefully I won’t, but there are two outcomes. I guess this is why I need a counselor. People say that we’re all going to die, and that I’ll die eventually, but I sure wasn’t planning to come this close in my 20s. There’s blood all over my bed. Last night was bad. I wish I knew what God’s bigger plan for me was. Everything is so uncertain right now. I don’t like this constant uncertainty.

Painsomnia

3 Jul

I’m up again at the butt-crack of dawn because I can’t sleep. Hospitals are awful for sleep, and pain is hard to sleep through. The sleeping meds wore off, and it’s about time for more pain meds…I can tell. I have a fever and my blood pressure is really low now, go figure. My O2 sats are low, too, so more oxygen for me. Can’t really leave until that’s under control…and until I go…who knows when that’ll be. The physical therapy lady should be coming in this morning and making me do some laps, which I’m actually not looking forward to even though I really do wanna get out of this bed. The list of things I can’t eat has gotten even longer, so I mostly just have a short list of things I can eat for now. It’s really just liquid things, so by eat, I mean drink or slurp or however I choose to ingest it. That’s about all for this morning report.

Hospital Time

21 Apr

So I called my doctor’s answering service, and told them how I was feeling last night, and my doctor called me back and told me to go to the ER. I went to the ER, and I was taken back pretty quickly. They took some more blood even though they drew some blood already that morning. They did a sputum sample, a chest x-ray, and a CT scan. They eventually told me that I had a mild case of pneumonia, and put me on some antibiotics and fluids. They also put me on some medicine to bring down the fever as well as some painkillers. Hopefully since it’s mild, I’ll get to leave soon. I just feel so blah, and I know I have this exam coming up. This was just very inconvenient timing. That’s all though, I’m doing okay.

Sick Today

20 Apr

I’m feeling really sick today. I’m cold to the bone, I can’t stop shaking, and I’m really dizzy. I feel very weak and nauseous, my whole body hurts, I’m running a fever, and I feel like if I stand up, I just may faint. I had blood drawn today, but they still haven’t called me about it. I’ve been so tired, too. I can’t get anything done today, but I was able to take a good nap, and I needed that. I also had some tea to warm up, but I still feel so so cold, and that’s with 5 sweaters, 3 pairs of socks, fuzzy pants and tights, and a space heater on. GAH I just wanna feel better, I have a miniboard exam to study for. When I get out of school next month, I will have been in school for 11 months straight. That’s why I’m so burnt out on studying.

Psychedelic Rainbow Turbo Squid Party in my Head

28 Jan

Apparently, I lost 5 lbs this weekend. My hem/onc was not pleased about it because the whole point of using the PEG tube was to gain weight…but if I know my body, it’s going to do exactly the opposite of what it’s supposed to. Maybe he should have put me on a diet…some reverse psychology could have worked? I dunno, just a thought. But if I know about it, is it really reverse psychology?

Anyways…I’m apparently on too much Dilaudid and IV Benadryl to have coherent thoughts right now? It’s like a psychedelic rainbow turbo squid party in my head. At least that means that I’ll be able to sleep tonight! That’s good, because my stomach is killing me!! Ugh. My lung nodules apparently like…grew or whatever. I was hoping for only good news since I started this new med for the mRCC in December. Some good news, though, is that I have been able to pee! Ok, maybe I didn’t need to share that? Ah, what the heck!

Anyways what was I saying…so I could have lost 5 lbs from having a fever and stuff and my body needed extra “juice” to keep it chugging. I’m supposed to keep eating with my mouth, too…you know, so I can still swallow and stuff later, but…I don’t wanna! It hurts and it’s just exhausting. Plus, I’m really not hungry. Pretty sure I don’t do enough in a day to work up an appetite. Well…except for when Prednisone is involved. Then, it makes me wanna eat anything ever.

They had me talk to the nutritionist, and she didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know, but she’s nice, so…you know, whatever and stuff. Plus, now I have to eat on a neutropenic diet type thing until my counts come back up. Chemo kinda obliterated them. Makes it hard to actually know what to eat and what not to eat, so then I just get frustrated and say forget the whole thing and just do the PEG tube stuff. And I’m supposed to like…not have a lot of sugary things, I think cuz tumors like glucose, but not too much protein or anything acidic really, cuz my kidney is in the process of failing, and no fresh fruits or veggies because of my blood counts, but they said cooked veggies generally don’t have enough calories, and when you cook them, you lose a lot of the nutritional value…I feel like instead of telling me what NOT to eat, they should tell me what TO eat. I’m also having some irritation in my mouth and GI tract that just makes anything involving food kinda miserable, and once I get past the “eating” part of it…well don’t even get me started on what happens after that. No one wants to know. I don’t really know where I was going with this, so I guess I should stop before I divulge too much information lol. Kthxbai!

Keep Calm and Enjoy 2013

7 Jan

I’ve been thinking about my own mortality a lot recently. Not to be dark and gloomy or anything, but I’m a little scared. I’m sitting here, core body temperature nearly high enough to boil water (kind of an exaggeration), and I realize…I have a serious illness that could kill me. I could die. I could be dead soon. These thoughts start repeating over and over in my head in a variety of different grammatical constructs, but I’ll spare you the superfluousness. Now, this is not the first time I’ve realized this or had these thoughts, but after so many tests, procedures, surgeries, and treatments, those thoughts can fade into the background and randomly resurface on nights like these.

I have been really stressed out and depressed lately, but thinking back…in my short 22 years of life, the vast majority of them were wonderful and amazing. The ones that weren’t so much so (2012, if we’re naming names) had their amazing parts, as well. I’ve had a very blessed life up to this point. Last year, I graduated college and was accepted into medical school. That’s huge! That’s been my dream for as long as I can consciously remember (NOT an exaggeration).

I talked to my mom today, and she reminded me that a lot of people get depressed this time of year. She’s right. She suggested some things that I do, and her suggestions are always very good. I should take them, but will I? I’m not sure. It depends on how motivated I feel towards doing anything at all.

I talked to a friend of mine, and she pointed out that no one knows how long they have. That seems so obvious now, but it’s something I never really thought about, I guess. I mean, unless you have some kind of life shaking event happen to you or someone close to you, most people tend to take it for granted that tomorrow they’ll wake up and jump right into the daily grind. Anything could happen to anyone at any time, I just get slapped in the face with reminders of my own mortality more frequently, that’s all.

Life is really short. I’ve been really angry and upset about what’s going on in my life right now, and I still am, but right now…in this moment…I can actually have some perspective and focus on all the things that have gone right. There are so many more of those that it just doesn’t seem fair to discount any year as a loss, really. Even though 2013 has not gotten off to a good start by any means, I’m still here to experience it, and that’s half the battle, I guess. I’ll see where this crazy life of mine takes me next.

This Crap Again.

7 Jan

Just got out of the hospital. Now I gotta go right back. Sucks.
